Durango Dermatology offers the full spectrum of skin care needs from diagnosis to treatment.

Mohs Micrographic Surgery and Skin Cancer Surgery

Dr. Mark Gaughan is a fellow in the American Society of Mohs Surgeons and performs excisions for skin cancers and Mohs surgery for advanced skin cancers in Durango, CO. The majority of skin cancers diagnosed at Durango Dermatology are treated by excision under local anesthetic at the office. Mohs Micrographic Surgery is used for recurrent or aggressive skin cancers as well as those located in cosmetically sensitive areas. Mohs Micrographic Surgery is a technique that allows for immediate and complete microscopic examination of the surgical specimen by the surgeon giving us the highest reported cure rate.

Dermatopathology Laboratory

Durango Dermatology has an in-house laboratory in which we process our own biopsy and excisional specimens.

Photodynamic Therapy (Blue Light)

Photodynamic Therapy is a procedural therapy approved for the treatment of Actinic Keratoses. Actinic Keratoses are precancerous lesions with the potential to develop into skin cancers. Photodynamic Therapy is an alternative to cryotherapy and topical therapy. Photodynamic Therapy is an effective treatment option with minimal downtime. While at the office, a photosensitizing agent is applied to the face and/or scalp. After allowing the medication to absorb for about one hour, the patient is placed under the blue light. This creates a reaction that destroys precancerous cells. A patient can expect redness to bronzing for several days following the treatment.

Excimer Laser

The Excimer laser is a medical laser used for the treatment of a variety of inflammatory skin conditions, including psoriasis, vitiligo and atopic dermatitis. This device emits a narrow range of ultraviolet light to target treatment resistant areas. This treatment usually requires 1-2 sessions per week for 8-12 weeks to achieve remission. A person may experience mild sunburn symptoms in the treated areas.

Accure Laser

Accure is a new treatment, utilizing a unique laser wavelength specifically for acne. The treatment safely and effectively denatures the sebaceous gland, reducing the production of sebum (oil). By normalizing the amount of oil produced, the appearance of facial or body acne is significantly improved.

How long will it take to see results?
Most patients begin seeing results after their first treatment and see continued results after each treatment. Studies showed an 80% reduction in acne lesions after 4 treatments and sustaining results over time.

Does it hurt?
Prior to treatment, the area is numbed. During the treatment, the majority of patients find it to be tolerable.

Is there downtime?

Most patients experience little to no downtime. Your skin might be flushed, red, or puffy after the treatment. This resolves within a couple of days. You might notice a temporary acne flare-up, this is normal. There should be no disruption to your regular schedule and activities.

Will my insurance cover the cost?
This treatment is not currently covered by insurance.
