What is a Dermatologist?
A dermatologist is a board certified MD or DO, specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and cancers of the skin. Following 4 years of medical school and 1 year of internship a dermatologist begins an intensive 3 year study of skin cancers and diseases. Many dermatologists are also trained in cosmetic procedures.

What is the best method of skin cancer prevention?
Skin cancer prevention begins in childhood, with approximatly 50% of skin damage done before the age of 21. Prevention is largely the avoidence of direct sun exposure and especially sun burns. Protection is achieved through the use of clothing, includine hats, long sleeve shirts, sunglasses and sunscreens.

What can I do for my dry skin?
In the Four Corners , the climate is very arid and tends to dehydrate the skin. Creams are more effective than lotions for trapping moisture in the skin. Lotions are water based and often evaporate soon after application. Results are best when cream is applied to damp skin, i.e. after a shower.

What are skin tags?
Skin tags, or Acrochordons, are a common fibrous lesion of the skin. They are usually skin colored to slightly pigmented growths that commonly occur on the neck, under the arms and the groin. They range in size from 1mm to 2cm. They usually have no symptoms, but may became painful do to irritation.

Does your diet effect acne?
In general, diet does not have a significant effect on a person's acne. However, certain individuals will notice worsening of their acne with the consumption of fatty foods, dairy products and foods high in sugar content. As with your overall health, a well balanced diet is recommended.

I have had my moles all my life, why should I be concerned?
Moles should be monitored for changes. A changing mole can be a sign of Malignant Melanoma.

Do I need to see a surgeon to have my skin cancer removed?
All of our dermatologists are trained in the surgical removal of skin cancers. We work in coordination with other surgical specialists, occasionally in more advanced cases.

How often should I see a Dermatologist?
The frequency of your visits to the dermatologist depends on the nature and severity of your skin condition. In general, it is recommended to have an annual skin cancer screening for those at risk. The age of your first screening exam will vary depending your skin type and family history and prior sun exposure.
